A Non-Governmental Organization operating in the upper east region, International Women’s Hope Centre (IWHC) has organized Breast Screening Exercise and Examination. The activities where organized by the organization to mark the breast cancer awareness month.
Centre Director of the organization, Gladys Anayem said the rational for organizing the exercise was to create awareness of breast cancer to the young adolescents. Adding that, the exercise would also help the girls learn how to carry out self-examination on themselves to identify lumps which could be an indication of a cancer.
“As you know, we are in the breast cancer awareness month. The organization therefore is organizing this exercise to first of all create the awareness of the disease and also help these young adolescent girls learn how to perform self-examination on themselves. You know, if they feel a lump in their breast, this could be a sign and they will need to visit an expert for interpretation.”
The organization in collaboration with two midwives from the Ghana Health Service examined Eighty-Six (86) female students were at the Bolgatanga Senior High School. Also, one hundred and ninety-five adolescents and women benefited from the free breast examination at the Sandema Senior High School in the Builsa North Municipality.
According to the Director of IWHC, the organization intends to visit some other schools in the region to extend same service before the end of the Breast Cancer awareness month.
