I least expected this to be my story. Being a teenage mother is a real challenge; a challenge I am willing to overcome for the future of my son. My story is that of ignorance and lack of parental affection.
I was born into a polygamous home where parental love was far from reach. I was given little attention at home; a situation I believe led me into my current state. Being enrolled to my community’s basic school granted me the opportunity to make friends and mingle. It at least gave me freedom and a feeling of belonging.
As I aged, I gave little attention to the natural changes that were occurring and least expected I would be taken advantage of. I played a lot especially around teenage boys of my age. One showed me a lot of affection and would buy me gifts often. I grew so fond of him that I was willing to do anything for him. In my state of vulnerability, he eventually lured me into going to bed with him. I started feeling sick after some weeks. I wasn’t scared because I thought it was normal. I only got to know I was pregnant after I was taken to the CHPS by my teacher who noticed some changes.
The young man denied responsibility of the pregnancy. I was introduced to IWHC by a midwife at my community’s CHPS who attended to me. We both visited the centre where I was counselled severally on my condition and the best decision to take; that’s keeping the baby. Aside the counselling the organization also supported me with ultrasound check-ups for free up till my delivery. Thanks to IWHC, I have been enrolled into skill training and I am now an apprentice learning smock weaving. They also supported with baby clothing and detergent for my child.
Words aren’t enough to describe my gratitude. I thank Gladys Adochim, President of International Women’s Hope Centre (IWHC), donors, partners and friends of the organization for their immense support. My joy, excitement and hope today are because you cared differently.
Gloria.
